提高文字简明性的优化方法

【摘要】:[5,7]文字的简明性不仅让论文易于读懂,也节省了读者和编辑的时间。这样撰写论文,不仅花费很大的精力,最终得到的文章也是不中不英,有时表达的意思甚至偏离了自己的本意,例如:“The influence of content of Si on the glass forming abilityof coating was firstly investigated to show that coating has best GFA when the content of Si is at 18%.”这句话可能是从中文“首先研究了体系中Si含量对合金涂层非晶形成能力的影响,结果表明:在Si含量为18%时,涂层具有最大的非晶形成能力。”

提高文字简明性的优化方法

科技论文与其他科学出版物一样,行文必须简洁。[5,7]文字的简明性(conciseness)不仅让论文易于读懂,也节省了读者和编辑的时间。与文字简明相反的是词语繁复、句型冗长、生硬翻译和文字重复。

(1)词语繁复。例如:

(a)繁复:Table 4 gives a comparison of layer thicknesses...

简明:Table 4 compares layer thicknesses...

(b)繁复:There is an absence of such microstructures within the bulk.

简明:Such microstructures are absent in the bulk.

(2)句型冗长。例如:

(a)“Requirements on safety and fuel reduction imposed to the automotive industry are leading to the development of new steels with combinations of higher strength and formability.”表述不直截了当,完全可以简化为:

“Safety and fuel reduction demanded by the automotive industry require new steels to be developed that combine higher strength and formability.”

(b)“So when the water under a certain pressure is sprayed to the surface of the plate at some angle in the direction of strip motion,the vapor film formed between the residual water and strip surface will be cleaned so as to achieve a full contact between the plate and the cooling water,and then realizes a nucleate boiling,which not only has a great significance for achieving an extremely high cooling rate by accelerating the heat transfer between the cooling water and the steel plate,but also it is probable to obtain an extremely uniform temperature distribution after ultra-fast cooling which can greatly avoid the warping of the steel plate.”这个长句按时间顺序描写了对超快速冷却过程的设想,读者很难理解作者的主要观点是什么。而且,其中有不少语法错误。可以改写为:

“The prominent advantage of ultra-fast cooling compared with the traditional method is that it can realize a nucleate boiling almost from the start of cooling.The nucleate boiling greatly improves the cooling efficiency and avoids the warping of the steel plate by breaking steam film efficiently.”

在我们对英语语言掌握尚不够自如的情况下,更应当使用常用的词汇,按照常规途径把信息组织在一起,书写短句、简单句。在EASE在Guidelines的附录Appendix Simplicity[4]中列出了不少如何简化表述的例子,值得论文作者参考。

(3)生硬翻译。作者应该自始至终使用英语撰写论文,千万不要先写成中文的论文,然后再把它翻译成英文。这样撰写论文,不仅花费很大的精力,最终得到的文章也是不中不英,有时表达的意思甚至偏离了自己的本意,例如:(www.xing528.com)

(a)“The influence of content of Si on the glass forming ability(GFA)of coating was firstly investigated to show that coating has best GFA when the content of Si is at 18%.”

这句话可能是从中文“首先研究了体系中Si含量对合金涂层非晶形成能力的影响,结果表明:在Si含量为18%时,涂层具有最大的非晶形成能力。”翻译成英语的。翻译不仅造成了文字的重复,而且英语结构be investigated to show that...是不正确的。应改为:“Investigation on the influence of Si content on the glass forming ability(GFA)of the coatings shows that the highest GFA was achieved at 18%Si.”

(b)“Among three alloys Fe31 Ni31Si18 B18 Nb2,Fe30 Ni30Si20 B18 Nb2,Fe32 Ni32Si16 B18 Nb2,coating of Fe31 Ni31Si18 B18 Nb2 has the best capacities of highest hardness,modulus,and antiplastic deformation.”

句子改为“Of the three alloys investigated,Fe31 Ni31Si18 B18 Nb2,Fe30 Ni30Si20 B18 Nb2,and Fe32 Ni32Si16 B18 Nb2,the Fe31 Ni31Si18 B18 Nb2 coating showed the highest hardness,elastic modulus,and resistance to plastic deformation.”通常,英语用“elastic modulus”(弹性模量);不能把中文的“抗塑性”生硬地翻译成“anti-plastic deformation”,应为“resistance to plastic deformation”。

(4)内容重复。例如,某篇论文稿件的结果部分的第一段如下:

“3.1 Hardness Testing

In this section the hardness results for all investigated heat treatments conditions will be presented.Those include the new developed N&T heat treatment as well as the conventional subcritical PWHT for various heat input conditions.Figures 2,3 and 4,illustrate the hardness profiles along the weld crosssection starting from the weld area through the HAZ to the base metal for all investigated heat input and heat treatment conditions.It is clearly indicated from the above figures that;the highest hardness is obtained at...”

在此论文的实验方法部分,作者已经介绍了实验样品的选择以及硬度试验的细节,所以上段文字的第一个长句是不必要的重复。此外,Figure 2、3和4是从三组不同热处理样品得到的硬度分布曲线。分离的三幅图不仅图解再三重复[见图10-1(a)],更重要的是不利于作者对不同样品的结果的相互比较讨论。论文的修订稿把这三幅图合并为一幅,图解也简单明确多了[见图10-1(b)]。这段文字最后简化为:

“3.1 Hardness Testing

Fig.2 shows the hardness profiles along weldments for various heat input and heat treatment conditions.The highest hardness is obtained at...”[8]
