61.正德元年（1506），宦官刘瑾受新登基的武宗皇帝朱厚照宠信，结成了太监专权的阉党集团，施行残酷的特务统治。大批忠直大臣被陷害致死。刘瑾假传圣旨，勒令正直的首辅大臣刘健、谢迁退休。

61.In the first year of Zhengde's reign（1506），Liu Jin，a eunuch，was favored by the newly enthroned emperor Zhu Houzhao，and formed the party of eunuchs.The eunuch's agency cruelly dictated over the country.A large number of loyal ministers were framed to death.Liu Jin，who conveyed the fake imperial edict，forced the upright and honorable top ministers Liu Jian and Xie Qian to retire.

62.担任兵部主事的王阳明，眼见阉党乱政，朝事日非，自己官职虽低（正六品），但当仁不让，不能不言，立即写了一份题为“乞宥言官去权奸以章圣德疏”的奏章，上疏论救南京科道、给事中戴铣等二十一人。刘瑾当即派出锦衣卫将他逮捕，廷杖四十。

62.Wang Yangming，being the minister of the army，witnessed the eunuch party disrupting the court，and the political situation became worse and worse.Even though he took a low position in the court，he felt obliged to stand out and speak his mind.He wrote a plea letter begging to recall the power from the eunuch immediately and exonerate twenty one officers like Dai Xian.Hearing this，Liu Jin at once sent the Jinyiwei（the eunuch bureaucracy）to arrest Wang Yangming，and they punished him with Tingzhang of 40.

63.校尉伸手探探王阳明的鼻子，还有一丝气息。刘瑾阴森森地说：“扔进大牢！”

63.After the beating，the leading military officer，put one finger under Wang Yangming's nose to see if he was still breathing and felt breath coming from him.Liu Jin said with a cold voice，“Throw him into the jail！”

64.王阳明在狱中渐渐苏醒过来。心灵的痛苦、身体的伤痛，一时都向他袭来，使他夜不能寐。周文王、孔子、屈原……历代圣贤榜样一个一个在他脑海中浮现出来，更加坚定了他做圣贤的信念。他在狱中作诗：“我心良匪石，讵为戚欣动！”

64.Wang Yangming woke up in the prison.The pain in his heart，and the ache of the body came upon him in one moment，keeping him awake all night.King Wen of Zhou，Confucius，Qu Yuan，etc.，those examples of sages in the past had confirmend Wang Yangming's belief of being a sage.He wrote a poem in the prison，“My heart is as tough as a stone，and no one can move it！”

65.王阳明在牢房里还有三位狱友，他在安慰他们的同时，竟然在监狱里开始对狱友讲学，讲做圣人的道理。“累累囹圄间，讲诵未能辍”，先生已将生死置之度外了！

65.Wang Yangming had three cellmates in the prison.While Wang Yangming was comforting them，he even started to teach them about the principles of being a sage in the prison.“Even it is exhausted to restrain yourself in the prison，but the preaching cannot be stopped”，said Wang Yangming.He had already left life and death out of consideration.

66.刘瑾知道王阳明之父王华时任礼部左侍郎，曾是孝宗皇帝的老师（日讲官），希望王华前来求情，并扬言：只要王华亲自来替儿子认错，王阳明不仅可释免罪责，还可升官。但王华刚正不阿，始终不肯求见刘瑾，结果被调离京城，改任南京吏部尚书。

66.Liu Jin knew that Wang Hua，the father of Wang Yangming，was an officer in the Ministry of Rites and the former teacher of Emperor Xiaozong.So he hoped Wang Hua could come to plea for his son，and said，“As long as Wang Hua comes to beg forgiveness for his son in person，Wang Yangming will not only be absolved from his crimes but also get a promotion in the court.”However，Wang Hua was unwilling to do it because of his upright personality.As a result，he was transferred out the capital city and took office as the Minister of Personnel in Nanjing，away from the capital city.

67.正德元年（1506）十二月，朝廷做出了关于王阳明的最终裁决：贬为龙场驿驿丞。

67.In December of the first Zhengde's reign year（1506），the court made the final ruling on the case of Wang Yangming.He was demoted to be an officer in the Longchang courier station.

68.王阳明离开京城，一路南行。刘瑾随即派出两名刺客跟踪，要趁机杀死王阳明先生。先生一到杭州，就发现有刺客跟踪，恐祸及家中亲人，即叫随身家童先行回家报知亲人，自己孤身一人暂时居住在杭州城外的胜果寺中。

68.Wang Yangming left the capital to the south.Liu Jin sent two assassins to follow Wang Yangming，seeking the opportunity to kill him.As soon as he arrived in Hangzhou，he found that there were assassins tracking him，and he was afraid that his family would be in danger.Wang Yangming sent his servants to go home first and inform his relatives，while he stayed in Shengguo Temple outside Hangzhou.

69.大弟王守俭到胜果寺看望王阳明。兄弟两人经过秘密商议，想出了一条金蝉脱壳之计。王阳明在寺庙墙壁上题写了一首《绝命诗》，其中有诗句说：“自信孤忠悬日月，岂论遗骨葬江鱼！百年臣子悲何极？日夜潮声泣子胥。”

69.His eldest younger brother Wang Shoujian visited Wang Yangming in Shengguo Temple.After a secret discussion，they came up with an idea that could help Wang Yangming escape.Wang Yangming wrote a poem on the wall of the temple titled“the End of life”，among which a verse said，“Once I was full of confidence，and believed that my faith and loyalty could be compared to the sun and the moon，but now my flesh will feed the fish in the river！It is the deepest sorrow for me as a politician.The sound of tides day and night is like crying for Wu Zixu.”(www.xing528.com)

70.王阳明叫王守俭穿上他的衣服，留在胜果寺中，自己孤身一人，避过刺客眼线，偷偷溜出胜果寺，来到钱塘江边。望着滚滚东流的江水，王阳明仰天长叹一声，随即脱掉衣服、鞋子，趁着夜色，纵身一跃，跳入波涛汹涌的钱塘江。

70.Wang Shoujian put on Wang Yangming's clothes，staying in Shengguo Temple.Wang Yangming slipped out of the temple，and then went to the Qiantang River，avoiding the watch of the assassins.He stared at the flowing waters，and looked up to the sky with a deep sigh.Then he took off his clothes and shoes，and jumped into the fast-flowing Qiantang River at night.

71.王阳明跳入钱塘江后，被大浪打晕，便一直顺流漂去，恰好到了舟山、福建一带沿海地区，被一条商船救起。

71.When Wang Yangming jumped into the Qiantang River，he was knocked out by the rapid waves，drifting away along the river.He was luckily saved by the businessman on a merchant ship，who was doing business in the coastal areas of Zhoushan，Zhejiang Province and Fujian Province.

72.船到福建，王阳明也恢复了体力，于是就谢过船主，上岸而去。

72.When the ship reached Fujian，Wang Yangming has recovered，so he went ashore after showing his gratitude to the captain.

73.王阳明在乱山荒野中步行了几十里，竟来到了东南名山武夷山中。时已至深夜，肚中饥饿难挡，抬眼望见一座古寺。王阳明扣动古寺门环，一位老僧开门出来，见王阳明先生身背一只沉甸甸的布囊，心中窃喜，便一口回绝。

73.Wang Yangming walked a dozen miles in the wilderness，and unexpectedly came to the Wuyi Mountain，a famous mountain in the southeast.It was late at night，and he felt hungry.So he looked around and found an old temple.Wang Yangming knocked on the door of the ancient temple，then an old monk opened the door and walked out，seeing Wang Yangming carrying a heavy cloth bag，the thought of him being a rich man made the monk feel happy inside his heart，but he rejected his proposal of staying in the temple for a night.

74.王阳明万般无奈，只好再往前走。走了不久，却见一座早已废弃的古庙。他实在太疲倦了，也不多想，走了进去，以香案作床，倒头便呼呼大睡。

74.Wang Yangming had no choice but to move on.After a short walk，there was an old abandoned temple.He was too tired to think，so he walked in，used the incense burner table as a bed，and fell asleep immediately.

75.次日天明，王阳明一觉醒来，却发现昨晚不接纳他的老僧就在旁边。那位僧人的脸上流露出大为惊奇的神色，问王阳明：“你昨晚睡得可好？”王阳明说：“似乎听到好大的呼呼声。”传说这座破庙就是“虎穴”，以前曾有人来此过夜，但没有一个幸免于虎口的。那位僧人之所以早早来到破庙，正是想来收拾王阳明的行囊。

75.The next morning，Wang Yangming woke up and found that the old monk who had not accepted him last night was standing beside him.The monk was surprised and asked Wang Yangming，“Did you sleep well last night？”Wang Yangming replied，“I heard a sound like a tiger that was roaring.”According to the tales，this temple was called“Tiger's Cave”.People who spend their nights here were all eaten by the tiger.The monk who arrived at the temple was just coming for picking up Wang Yangming's bag，thinking he might have been eaten by the tiger.

76.王阳明随着僧人来到寺庙，简单吃了些填肚子的东西，正打算要走，那位僧人却说：“且留步，有位高人想见你。”只见一位长髯美须的老道士，正笑容可掬地与他打招呼。来者不是别人，正是自己17岁那年在南昌铁柱宫与他对谈了一夜以至于误了洞房花烛夜的那位道人。

76.Wang Yangming followed the old monk to the temple and ate something common.After it，he decided to leave and just then the monk said，“Please wait，a talented person wants to meet you.”An old Taoist with a long and beauteous beard was greeting him smilingly.It was the Taoist that had a long night talk with Wang Yangming when he was 17 years old that time at Tiezhu Palace in Nanchang，which cost Wang Yangming's wedding night.

77.老道士从衣袖中掏出一卷纸，递给王阳明。打开一看，是老道士写的一首诗，其中两句说：“二十年前曾见君，今来消息我先闻。”老道士问王阳明：“经此一番磨难，不知你今后有何打算？”王阳明说：“世事浓淡，我已经不再挂怀了！正想从此遁世，做一个逍遥自在的人。”

77.The old Taoist took out a roll of paper from his sleeve and handed it to Wang Yangming.It was a poem written by the old Taoist.Two verse lines said，“I haven't seen you for twenty years，but today I heard the news of your coming early.”The old Taoist asked Wang Yangming，“What is your plan for the future after such a hard torture？”Wang Yangming said，“I am no longer caring about the social affairs.I just want to be a free people since then.”

78.老道士说：“刘瑾一旦获悉你还活着，一时恼怒起来，定然向你的父亲开刀。”说完，老道士拿出占卦用的五十五根蓍草，经过几次反复排放、掐算，说：“卦象明夷，日埋地中，不见光明，务须等待，待日出地上即有希望。你还是前往贵州龙场驿。龙场驿处于万山丛棘之中，虽荒僻，却是躲避官场险恶的好去处。”

78.The old Taoist said，“Once Liu Jin learns that you are still alive，he must be angry and is going to kill your father.”Just then，the old Taoist took out 55 yarrows for divination.After a few times'placement and calculation，he said，“The hexagram shows frustration，and the sun is buried in the land so that there's no light right now.You have to wait for the sunlight which means the hope.You had better go to the Longchang courier station in Guizhou Province，which is a good place to avoid the fierceness of the authority because of its unfrequented location.”

79.道士的一番话，如点醒梦中人。王阳明取过毛笔，在墙壁上题诗一首：“险夷原不滞胸中，何异浮云过太空！夜静海涛三万里，月明飞锡下天风。”题完诗，他直赴南京，拜别父亲，再回绍兴家中，带上一个老仆人和两个小书童，径直奔赴大西南方向的贵州龙场驿。

79.What the Taoist said totally enlightened Wang Yangming.He took a brush pen and wrote a poem on the wall.“All difficulties and dangers，just like floating clouds in the sky，they should not remain in heart.The night is calm and the sea is thirty thousand miles away with the bright moon flying in the sky.”After finishing the poem，he went directly to Nanjing to say goodbye to his father，then went back to Shaoxing to take an old servant and two little ones，and set off straightly for the Longchang courier station in Guizhou，which is located in the southwest.
