Charles Dickens was one of the most popular w riters of his day as well. His unique blend of humor, pathos and humanitarianism resounds throughout all his works, and made him wildly popular in his time. His depiction of Victorian society as being industrialized, greedy, and selfimportant has earned his a seat among the great morally and socially responsible w riters of history.

Plot:Scrooge the miser is a rich but cold, hard man.He is so stingy that even the beggar wouldn't ask him for a penny. He accumulates large amount of money but is unwilling to add coal to the fire in the office of his clerk Bob.

On Christmas Day,his well-intentioned nephew Fred invites him to a Christmas party, but he puts aside the invitation, thinking Fred wants to take advantages of him.

Social workers come to ask him to give some money to the poor for Christmas food and drink, but he rejects them coldly. When he comes back home in the evening,he sees the spirit of a ghost in the darkness. Is it really a ghost or his own illusion? However, the appearance of the ghost makes great changes in him.

On Christmas Eve,the spirit of his former partner M arley appears in his house, telling him that three ghosts will come to visit him. Thus in the following two nights, three ghosts—the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present ,and the Ghost of Yet to Come—appear in front of him respectively.

The Ghost of Past Christmas takes him to his childhood. He can see that he was very lonely at that time and his young sister Fan showed him with great affection. On another occasion when he worked as an apprentice, his kind-hearted boss Fezziwig enjoyed a dancing party with all his employees on Christmas evening and treated them with cake and meat and wine.(www.xing528.com)

Scrooge's heart softens at the sight of all these things and he begins to feel regretful about his attitude to his clerks. He also feels remorseful about his own transformation from a poor, but happy young man to a rich but cold, hard employer. The Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to a Christmas gathering of one of his clerks Bob's home.Bob is a poor Clerk with little pay and there are no Christmas presents,no turkey at the party, but everyone in the house wears happy smiles on their faces.

The Ghost of Yet to Come takes him to see his own future. He gets older and becomes seriously ill in bed,but no friends and relatives come to see him even on Christmas Day,a miserable sight to him.

Therefore,Scrooge begins to think about the meaning oflife and finds out that giving makes one happier than receiving.A ll this brings back other aspects of his nature—sympathy, kindness, love and happiness. From then on he turns into a man who is always ready to help others. On the following morning of the ghosts' visits, the morning of Christmas, his clerk Bob is late for work, thinking Scrooge will be very angry at him.On the contrary,he greets Bob,"Merry Christmas,my Boy! I'll give you a raise and help you with your poor family.Go and make a fire,a big fire."

He then buys a very big turkey and has it sent to Bob's house.Later he goes to visit his nephew Fred for the first time in his life.He greets everyone he meets in the street "Merry Christmas" and people smile kindly back to him.For the first time in his life Scrooge feels really happy in his heart.
