Thank you for the opportunity to share with you the different ways in which Sincere has strived to innovate and add value to our role as a retailer and distributor.

These reinventions are necessary to remain ahead of the fast changing landscape,one which has seen consumers become more sophisticated,and also become increasingly saturated with the entry of new brands and retailers.The brand owners in the luxury watch market have also began to expand beyond their traditional roles to move both upstream and downstream in the traditional supply chain.

Sincere started in 1954 as a traditional retailer that was home to some of the most popular brands at that time.Since then,we have grown to become a strong regional company that is well represented throughout Asia.Our success in keeping ahead of the curve has been due to a committed desire to first get the foundation correct,and then innovate by pushing the boundaries of watch retailing.

Let me share some of our key success factors.

One of the key strengths of Sincere is our strong passion for watches.We firmly believe that we need people passionate about watches to run our business,which is why this is a key attribute we look for in our new staff right from the start.This passion is evident throughout the organization and easily be seen from the brands we represent,to the manner in which these brands are presented,and sold to the customers.It is this passion for watches that has helped us to make many correct choices over the years.

Another cornerstone of our foundation is strong commitment to continuing education to both our staff and customers.The level of the sophistication of the Asian watch buyers has been growing exponentially and we are home to a larger percentage of discerning collectors and enthusiasts compared to Europe or the US.Several factors have contributed to this sophistication and key among them is the proliferation of information that can be found in the web and high quality watch publications that have sprung up in recent years to feed their hunger and knowledge.The globalization of the marketplace has also erased boundaries and made sourcing and buying watches from around the world much easier.In such an environment,it becomes increasingly important that our staff is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively deal with demanding and equally knowledgeable customers.To this end,we have structured regular training sessions that begin when we orientate new staff into the watch world and continue as they move up the horological tree.

In closing,I would like to use this analogy to illustrate the importance of understanding and adapting to inevitable environmental changes.Just as a shark ill die if it does not continue to swim forward,we need to remind ourselves of the urgent need to keep moving forward by continuously innovating and providing value to our partners and customers.Only then can we ensure that we remain relevant and continue to be around to meet future challenges.Just like the shark.Thank you for your attention and time.

分析:本句出现了产业链的上游、下游。经济学的微笑曲线指出,上游往往是利润比较丰厚,竞争相对缓和。而下游处于产业链末端,通常加工原材料和零部件,制造成品和从事生产、服务行业。上下游在经济学里就直接可以翻译为upstream and downstream。

(3)覆盖亚洲各国各地

分析:中文里的某公司某企业经营范围很广,已经覆盖某某地区除了可以翻译为to operate in,还可以翻译为本句的to be well represented in/throughout。用be represent在这里指在亚洲各地都有代理。

(4)培训期是在引导新员工步入手表领域时开始,培训他们继续朝着钟表这棵大树往上攀爬。

分析:一般企业对新员工的培训期翻译为orient or orientation,新生入学的培训适应期也可以翻译为orient or orientation。

分析:中文的与时俱进通常翻译为to keep pace with the times,但是本参考译文的翻译更加地道简单,就是be relevant。

2.说服型的商务演讲

Good evening ladies and gentleman and on behalf of Home From Home I would like to welcome you to the Grand Café.

My name is Rich Watts.Thank you for accepting our invitation to join us here this evening and I hope that in return for us providing you with canapés and drinks,(1)you'll take the time now to listen to me for ten minutes as I tell you a little bit about the downfall of the modern hotel.

Customers and employees are key to any business.Great customers place large orders and help you to make profits and grow.Great employees work hard,save you costs and provide outstanding customer service.

(2)So why do we insist on taking them away from their homes and putting them in small dark rooms in strange cities?

Let's have a think about what our most important customers and outstanding staff members experience when they visit our offices for a crucial meeting about placing that big order.

First of all we make them travel a long distance away from their home and loved ones.We then make them work hard all day at our offices or in meetings.Then we expect them to return to a single room in a city that they do not know.After this long day we then ask them to go out in the evening and search for somewhere to eat.We make our best staff and customers pay restaurant prices for food that they may not like or enjoy,especially if they are used to food from another culture.We then request that they return to their room and enjoy the very best that British Freeview television has to offer until they get so bored that sleeping is better than staying awake.The following day we then ask them to do this all again and remain motivated or interested in that big business deal.

Is this how you want your best employees or customers treated?

At Home From Home we've found that businesses have much happier customers and staff if they really look after them.(3)We supply serviced accommodation;fully furnished flats to help ensure that your key staff and customers can relax properly when working away from home.

You'll notice that the presentation behind me has no images in it—you haven't actually seen the properties that your key staff or best customers will be staying in.(5)This is because we've paid lots of money for expensive photo shoots for each apartment and the images that are produced still don't do the properties justice.

分析:根据上下文可以知道,本文主要推荐酒店式公寓,所以提前给听众告知今天的演讲的目的。注意原文里的downfall的意思是“衰落、衰败、垮台”。如果直接翻译为“当代酒店是怎样垮台的”显得过于直接露骨,所以参考译文用了“日渐式微”来缓和中文语气,也运用四字格让译文听起来比较正式、符合汉语听众期待。

那么我们为什么还让他们工作、出差时不仅远离温馨家园,还屈尊住宿在陌生城市里光线晦暗的酒店房间呢?

分析:本句的翻译要根据上下文来。前面提到了优秀员工和优质客户的重要性,这里讲这些人应该有相应的待遇。taking them away from their homes要理解深层含义,就是说这些人离开家要么工作、要么出差,需要找住宿。而small dark rooms指的是酒店的房间。之所以这样说是为了和后面提到的酒店式公寓房间做出对比,让人们接受酒店式房间的好处。

他看着母亲经营旅客之家长大,可以说他生来就是干这行的,或者说酒店公寓已经融入了他的血液。

分析:注意原文的run this business指代很清楚,就是指的旅客之家,翻译的时候应该说清楚。

(5)This is because we've paid lots of money for expensive photo shoots for each apartment and the images that are produced still don't do the properties justice.

我们花了重金打造的酒店图片根本不足以展现酒店的全貌。

分析:本句的难点在于don't do the properties justice。properties这里是特指,就是说的旅客之家的酒店式公寓。do…justice的意思是“公平对待、公正的评价”。这句话的意思是无论花了多少钱拍的酒店式公寓的照片都没有酒店式公寓本身漂亮。
